Directorate of Mines and Geology was a part of Composite Directorate of Industries and Mines. Prior to Goa's liberation, it was a part of Directorate of Economic Services. However, after Goa Liberation, it formed a part of the Directorate of Industries and Mines for quite some time. It was only with effect from 19th Feb 2004, the Directorate of Mines was separated from Directorate of Industries and Mines and became full fledged Directorate of Mines and Geology.

The overall structure of the Directorate of Mines & Geology can be divided into 4 broad categories, namely

• Minor Minerals
• Environment
• Administration

The Director of Mines and Geology is the Head of the Department
